Melbourne is synonymous with brunching, and I have to say, it's got to be one of my favourite parts about living in the city. I'm a sucker for brunch, so it's safe to say I've checked out a few of the best cafes in Melbourne. Here, I have gathered five of my favourites. The ones I have selected are probably what I would call lesser known spots, some of them are in the suburbs rather than inner city, but they are all definitely worth checking out. It's easy to find a cafe on every corner when you're in Melbourne CBD, Hawthorn, or South Yarra for example, but these ones will have your mouth watering just as much, and it may just be easier to get a table! (PS: do be sure to check whether a booking is required for a brunch spot in Melbourne prior to going, it really is a popular activity!).
Nelson, Box Hill
Who can go past Nutella Hong Kong Waffles with vanilla mascarpone, banana brûlée, strawberries, pistachios, and raspberry puree? Not me! This little cafe is hidden away in Box Hill, not where you would expect to find a great brunch spot, but it sure did deliver. If you live in the Eastern suburbs, or are willing to make a little drive, then this is worth a go.
2. The Glass Den, Eltham
Looking at the incredibly well designed dishes from the Glass Den makes me think it is brunch fit for a princess...or perhaps Miss World Australia. That's right, I took current Miss World Australia, Sarah Marschke for a delicious and colourful brunch here, and she was pleased! This is not my first visit though, you simply can't stop at once, because there are too many things on the menu that you want to order!
3. Bowls Baby, Essendon
The moment I found this little cafe, I knew all my açai bowl needs were sorted! After coming back from Hawaii I had a new found obsession for bowls, and it wasn't long after arriving home that I found this little gem...my wishes were heard. Perfect to eat in or take away, Bowls Baby have so many delicious sweet or savoury bowls to choose from, and cute little smoothies to go with. I can never go past the peanut butter bowl...
4. Barlog Espresso, Docklands
Ok, so technically Docklands is inner, but anyone who has ever been to Docklands would know just how quiet it is considering it's close proximity to Melbourne! I had never thought to venture into Docklands for brunch, but Barlog Espresso was well worth a visit. If you can't tell by now, I have a major sweet tooth, so these fairy floss covered pancakes had me!
5. St Rose, Essendon
St Rose is only a few doors down from Bowls Baby in Essendon, but gives you more of that authentic brunch experience. The aesthetic of the cafe is very synonymous with Melbournian style, and the food matches that. If you haven't yet tried a turmeric latte, give one from here a try!
It's hard to summarise all of Melbourne brunch into just five spots, but if you're after any more suggestions, feel free to get in touch. I am also always looking for new spots to try, so if you know a little gem, share away!
Happy brunching xx
